Communist Military Tunnels in the Woods

Most tourists leave Albania never knowing the full scale of Enver Hoxha's bunker obsession. Kruje holds its own set of overgrown, forgotten military tunnels carved directly into the forested hillsides, and very few visitors ever see them.

Your guide will drive you to the trailhead, then lead you on foot through pine forest to reach the first of several tunnel complexes. You'll step inside concrete corridors that haven't been officially used in over thirty years, where silence is broken only by water dripping from old ventilation shafts.

We'll talk through the political context that built these structures, the paranoia of a country that expected invasion from every direction, and the lives of the soldiers who manned these posts.
