Path of Skanderbeg: Summit of Skanderbeg Mountain

Skanderbeg Mountain, rising to 1723 metres above the town, is not just a backdrop to Skanderbeg's story. It was the story. During his 25-year resistance against the Ottoman Empire (1443–1468), Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg used these slopes as a natural fortress: an observation point, a refuge, and a line of defence that no Ottoman army could easily take. The path named after him climbs through the same terrain, past the remnants of ancient fortifications that are still visible in the forest.

The trail begins at the Qafshtama Bottled Water Factory in the Cudhi Administrative Unit, a 35-minute drive from Kruje. From there, 3.71 km of ascending trail passes through successive vegetation zones: oak and beech forest in the lower sections, then dill and pine as the altitude climbs, with numerous streams of icy crystal-clear water crossing the path throughout. The summit at 1723 metres opens to a panorama that stretches across the Adriatic coastline to the west and as far as Burrel and Mali i Dejës to the east.

The climb takes approximately 2.5 hours at a steady pace; the descent another 2 hours. Total trail time is around 5 hours. The terrain is rugged but the path is clear and manageable for most walkers with reasonable fitness. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable conditions; in summer the upper forest provides shade and the mountain streams are a welcome stop.
