Frequently Asked Questions

Everything You Need to Know About Visiting Krujë

Common questions about our tours, the city, and planning your visit.

Where exactly is Krujë located?

Krujë (also spelled Kruja) sits 600 metres above sea level in central Albania, just 32 km north of Tirana — about a 40-minute drive. It's easily reachable as a day trip from Tirana, Durrës, or the Albanian Riviera.

What is the most famous thing to see in Krujë?

Krujë Castle and the Skanderbeg Museum are the headline attractions. The castle was the stronghold from which national hero Gjergj Kastrioti (Skanderbeg) repelled Ottoman invasions five times in the 15th century. The Old Bazaar directly below it is one of the best-preserved Ottoman bazaars in the Balkans.

Do I need a guide to visit Krujë?

The castle and bazaar are easy to explore independently. However, for the Cold War tunnels, Albanopolis ruins, canyon hike, and mountain trails a guide is strongly recommended — many of these sites are unmarked, unfenced, and difficult to locate without local knowledge.

What tours does VisitKruja offer?

We offer 9 guided experiences: Krujë Castle & Old Bazaar, Communist Military Tunnels, Holy Cave of Sari Salltik, Canyon Hike, Albanopolis Ruins, Ottoman Bridges Walk, Qafshtama National Park, Wild Olive Nature Walk, and an All-Inclusive full-day tour. Prices start from €15 per person.

How do I book a tour?

Click 'Book a Tour' on any tour page and fill in the request form — we'll reply within 24 hours to confirm availability. You can also reach us directly on WhatsApp at +355 68 521 8252 or by email at visitkruje@gmail.com.

What languages do the guides speak?

Our guides lead tours in English, Italian, Albanian, and German.

What is the best time of year to visit Krujë?

April–June and September–October offer the most comfortable temperatures (18–26°C) and clear skies. July–August are hotter (30°C+) but still excellent for the castle and bazaar. Winter (December–February) can be cold and occasionally snowy — ideal for a dramatic atmospheric visit, less suitable for canyon or mountain hikes.

How long should I spend in Krujë?

A minimum of 3–4 hours covers the castle and bazaar. A full day (6–8 hours) lets you combine a guided tour with lunch and the bazaar. For serious hikers or Cold War history enthusiasts, an overnight stay in Krujë is worth considering.

Is Krujë safe for tourists?

Yes. Krujë is a very safe destination with very low crime and a strong tradition of hospitality (the Albanian concept of 'besa'). Standard travel precautions apply as anywhere.

Can I visit the Communist tunnels independently?

No. The tunnel complexes are located deep in forested hillsides with no signage, no formal access paths, and no lighting inside. A guide is required for both navigation and safety. All our tunnel tours include a local expert and appropriate lighting.

Is Albanopolis (Zgërdhesh) free to enter?

Yes. The Albanopolis Illyrian ruins are completely open, unfenced, and free to visit at any time. There is no ticket booth, no official trail, and no crowds — which is exactly what makes it extraordinary. We recommend visiting with a guide to properly identify the city walls, foundation stones, and viewpoints.

Are the tours suitable for children or elderly visitors?

The Castle & Old Bazaar tour, Ottoman Bridges Walk, and Wild Olive Nature Walk are suitable for all fitness levels including families with children and older visitors. The Canyon Hike and Albanopolis trek require moderate fitness. The Communist Tunnels require walking on uneven terrain in low light.
