Zeza River Gorge and Ottoman Bridges Hiking Tour
The Zeza River Canyon, Lumi i Zezës in Albanian, cuts between Skanderbeg Mountain and Gamnit Mountain, carrying snowmelt from Qafshtama National Park through limestone gorges toward the Ishëm valley. The trail follows a broad stone path through the canyon: past natural pools of crystal-clear emerald water, through a dramatic Natural Gate where the limestone walls press close on both sides, and past a hidden waterfall you hear long before you see it.
This was a working route for centuries. The ancient cobblestone path once linked Burrel, Tirana, Durrës, and Mat through these mountains, and the two Ottoman bridges that survive are evidence of that traffic. The Bridge of Abdyl Agha at the canyon entrance was built around 1810 to 1820 from limestone quarried on the mountain beside it, and was restored in 2021. The Bridge of Kurcaj at the far end dates from the 18th century. Both are listed as first-category cultural monuments. Along the gorge walls, karstic caves provided shelter for caravans and, in later centuries, refuge during blood feuds.
The walk is easy: 2 km one-way on a broad stone trail, about two hours round trip, with minimal elevation change. The trailhead sits near the village of Nikel, 20 km from Tirana. Best visited March through October, in midsummer the pools are deep enough to swim. Your guide brings the bridges and the canyon to life with stories that do not appear in any guidebook.

The first Ottoman bridge marks the canyon entrance. Your guide explains its role connecting Skanderbeg Mountain with the Tirana highland and the trade routes it once served.
Follow the ancient stone path into the gorge. The canyon walls narrow at the Natural Gate, then open to reveal emerald pools and the hidden waterfall.
The second bridge, at the far end of the canyon: one high 18th-century arch with a small flood opening in the stonework beside it.
Walk back through the canyon and drive to your drop-off point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do this tour as a day trip from Tirana?
Yes. Kruja is 32 km from Tirana, a 45 to 55 minute drive. We collect you door-to-door from your Tirana hotel, a central meeting point or Tirana Airport (Rinas), run the tour, and have you back in Tirana the same day. Plan for the tour's listed duration plus about 45 to 55 minutes' drive each way. If you're continuing your trip, a one-way drop in Kruja works too.
Where do you pick up, Tirana, Durres or the beaches?
Pickup is door-to-door from any Tirana hotel, a central Tirana meeting point, Tirana Airport (Rinas) and the wider Tirana area, and from Durres, the cruise port and the Durres Riviera beach resorts including Golem, Qerret and Mali i Robit. Always a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle with your local driver-guide. You choose round-trip or a one-way drop in Kruja; private transfers are available too.
How far is Kruja from Tirana, and how long does it take?
Kruja is about 32 km north of Tirana, a 45 to 55 minute drive, and roughly 30 minutes from Tirana Airport (Rinas).
How much does the tour and the Tirana pickup cost?
The guided tour is €35 per person. Round-trip transfer from Tirana is quoted on request, because the price depends on your group size and date, sharing the vehicle with other guests is cheaper than a private transfer. Send us your hotel and dates and we'll give you an exact price.
