Kruje Castle, Old Bazaar & Hidden Paths Tour
Kruja sits just 32 km north of Tirana, a 45 to 55 minute drive, or about 30 minutes from Tirana Airport (Rinas), which makes it the easiest historic day trip from the capital. We can pick you up door-to-door from your Tirana hotel, a central meeting point or the airport in a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle with your local driver-guide, run the guided tour below, and have you back in Tirana the same day. You choose round-trip, or a one-way drop in Kruja if you're travelling on. Prefer to start in Kruja? The guided tour begins in the city centre.
The guided tour starts in the heart of Kruja with a short 15-minute walk down to the Old Bazaar (Çarshia e Vjeter). You'll wander the wooden-roofed cobblestone streets, meeting local artisans who still weave carpets on looms and craft silver the way their ancestors did 400 years ago.
From the bazaar you'll continue up to Kruja Castle, feeling the weight of the massive stone walls that successfully repelled the Ottoman Empire for decades. Your local guide will walk you through the fortress on the trail of Skenderbeu, Albania's national hero, with panoramic viewpoints overlooking central Albania and the coastline beyond.
Along the way you can choose to enter the Skanderbeg Museum and the Ethnographic Museum (both optional, with separate entrance fees). The guided portion runs 1h 15min to 2h 45min depending on the museums, plan a half-day, roughly 4 to 5 hours door-to-door from Tirana including travel both ways.
Built in the 5th century, surviving multiple sieges, housing the spirit of a nation.

Kruja Castle & Old Bazaar, Good to Know
Can I do this tour as a day trip from Tirana?
Yes, it's the most popular way to do it. Kruja is 32 km from Tirana, a 45 to 55 minute drive. We collect you door-to-door from your Tirana hotel, a central meeting point or Tirana Airport (Rinas), guide you through the castle and Old Bazaar, and have you back in Tirana the same day, plan about 4 to 5 hours door-to-door. If you're continuing your trip, a one-way drop in Kruja works too.
Can I do this tour as a day trip from Durres or Golem?
Yes. Kruja is about 35 km from Durres, 45 to 55 minutes by road, and Golem and the other Riviera resorts add 15 to 20 minutes. We pick up from Durres hotels, the cruise port and the beach resorts, and the tour fits in a morning, so you can be back at the beach for the afternoon.
Where do you pick up, Tirana, Durres or the beaches?
Pickup is door-to-door from any Tirana hotel, a central Tirana meeting point, Tirana Airport (Rinas) and the wider Tirana area, and from Durres, the cruise port and the Durres Riviera beach resorts including Golem, Qerret and Mali i Robit. Always a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle with your local driver-guide. You choose round-trip or a one-way drop in Kruja; private transfers are available too.
How far is Kruja from Tirana, and how long does it take?
Kruja is about 32 km north of Tirana, a 45 to 55 minute drive, and roughly 30 minutes from Tirana Airport (Rinas).
How much does the tour and the Tirana pickup cost?
The guided Kruja Castle & Old Bazaar tour is €20 per person. Round-trip transfer from Tirana is quoted on request, because the price depends on your group size and date, sharing the car with other guests is cheaper than a private transfer. Send us your hotel and dates and we'll give you an exact price.
How much is the entrance fee for Kruja Castle?
The castle hilltop and the Old Bazaar are open to walk through freely. Inside the citadel, the Skanderbeg Museum and the Ethnographic Museum each charge a small separate entrance fee, paid on site. On this tour the two museums are optional; if you want to go in, pay at the door, in lek and in cash.
What are the opening hours of Kruja Castle and the Old Bazaar?
The Old Bazaar stalls generally open daily from around 09:00 through the afternoon and are busiest late morning. The Skanderbeg Museum inside the castle is open daily 09:00–17:00, and the castle grounds themselves can be walked at any time.
Is the Skanderbeg Museum inside the castle worth visiting?
Yes. The Skanderbeg Museum tells the story of Gjergj Kastrioti (Skanderbeg), who held off the Ottoman Empire five times from this castle in the 15th century. The nearby Ethnographic Museum, set in a restored Ottoman house, shows how a wealthy Kruja family lived 200 years ago.
