Traditional Albanian Farm Cooking Class near Kruja
This is a hands-on cooking class on a small village farm in the countryside below Kruja, not in a restaurant or a city classroom. Kruja is 32 km from Tirana, so it makes an easy half day out of the capital: we collect you in Kruja, from your Tirana hotel, Tirana Airport (Rinas), Durres or Golem, drive you out to the farm, and bring you back after lunch. The exact location is shared once you book.
The class starts the way every visit starts in an Albanian village: with Albanian coffee or a glass of homemade raki, and a spoon of gliko, fruit preserved in syrup. Then we walk the garden and the farm together and pick what goes into lunch: peppers, tomatoes, greens and herbs, whatever the season is growing that week.
Then you cook. You roll the dough for byrek by hand, fill it with garden greens and gjizë (fresh curd cheese), and bake it the old Kruja way, under a saç: an iron lid heaped with wood embers. While it bakes, tave kosi, lamb baked in yoghurt and egg, goes into the oven, and you make fergese, peppers and tomatoes slow-cooked with gjizë. To finish there is hallvë me miell, the toasted-flour halva Kruja makes for family celebrations.
Everything you cooked comes to the farm table with salad from the garden, cheese, olives, turshi (pickled vegetables), homemade wine and more raki, outside in good weather and by the fire in winter. You take the recipes home. The menu follows the garden: nettle pie in spring, peppers and fergese in summer, beans and slow pots by the fire in winter. A vegetarian menu is available on request.

Albanian Cooking Class: Good to Know
Can I do this tour as a day trip from Tirana?
Yes. Kruja is 32 km from Tirana, a 45 to 55 minute drive. We collect you door-to-door from your Tirana hotel, a central meeting point or Tirana Airport (Rinas), run the tour, and have you back in Tirana the same day. Plan for the tour's listed duration plus about 45 to 55 minutes' drive each way. If you're continuing your trip, a one-way drop in Kruja works too.
Where do you pick up, Tirana, Durres or the beaches?
Pickup is door-to-door from any Tirana hotel, a central Tirana meeting point, Tirana Airport (Rinas) and the wider Tirana area, and from Durres, the cruise port and the Durres Riviera beach resorts including Golem, Qerret and Mali i Robit. Always a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle with your local driver-guide. You choose round-trip or a one-way drop in Kruja; private transfers are available too.
How far is Kruja from Tirana, and how long does it take?
Kruja is about 32 km north of Tirana, a 45 to 55 minute drive, and roughly 30 minutes from Tirana Airport (Rinas).
How much does the tour and the Tirana pickup cost?
The guided tour is €45 per person. Round-trip transfer from Tirana is quoted on request, because the price depends on your group size and date, sharing the vehicle with other guests is cheaper than a private transfer. Send us your hotel and dates and we'll give you an exact price.
What will we cook in the cooking class?
Three to four traditional dishes of the Kruja area, depending on the season: byrek, a hand-rolled pie with greens and gjizë cheese baked under the saç; tave kosi, lamb baked in yoghurt and egg; fergese, peppers and tomatoes cooked with fresh cheese; and hallvë me miell, a toasted-flour halva. In spring the pie is often made with nettles and mountain herbs, and in winter we cook beans and slow dishes by the fire.
Is there a vegetarian or vegan option?
Yes. Byrek, fergese, the bean dishes and the halva are already vegetarian, and tave kosi is swapped for a vegetable dish. Vegan menus and allergies can usually be arranged too; tell us when you book so we can plan the menu and the shopping.
Do I need cooking experience? Is it good for kids?
No experience needed. You work at your own pace with your host showing every step, and rolling the dough is the part everyone remembers. Children are welcome and usually love the dough and the garden; tell us their ages when you book.
Where does the cooking class take place?
On a village farm in the countryside, a short drive from Kruja town, with a vegetable garden and a wood fire for the saç. We pick you up in Kruja, or from Tirana, Tirana Airport (Rinas), Durres or Golem, and share the exact location after booking.
What is traditional Albanian food?
Albanian village cooking is built on what the farm produces: hand-rolled pies (byrek, pite, lakror), yoghurt and fresh cheese, lamb, beans, peppers and tomatoes, olive oil and herbs from the hills, finished with a glass of raki. Around Kruja the classic dishes include tave kosi, fergese, nettle and herb pies, lakror baked under the saç, and sweets such as flour halva and kadaif.
What is a saç?
A saç (say 'sach') is a heavy iron lid that covers a round pie tray. Wood embers are heaped on top of it and raked under the tray, so the pie bakes slowly from both sides. It is how pies were baked in Albanian villages before electric ovens, and many houses around Kruja still use one.
Can I combine the cooking class with Kruja Castle on the same day?
Yes. Visit Kruja Castle and the Old Bazaar in the morning and come to the cooking class for lunch, with one pickup from Tirana or Durres. Tell us when you book and we'll plan the timing so you are back by late afternoon.
Can we book a private cooking class for our family or group?
Yes. Private classes for families, friends and small groups can be arranged on most days. The price depends on the group size and date; send us your dates and we'll quote it.
When is the best time of year for the cooking class?
It runs all year, and each season cooks differently: nettle and herb pies in spring, peppers and tomatoes for fergese in summer, the grape harvest and raki-making in autumn, and slow bean and meat dishes by the fire in winter. In July and August, book 3 to 4 days ahead.
