Zeza River Canyon & Ottoman Bridges

The Zeza River Canyon, Lumi i Zezës in Albanian, cuts between Skanderbeg Mountain and Gamnit Mountain, carrying snowmelt from Qafshtama National Park through limestone gorges toward the Ishëm valley. The trail follows a broad stone path through the canyon: past natural pools of crystal-clear emerald water, through a dramatic Natural Gate where the limestone walls press close on both sides, and past a hidden waterfall you hear long before you see it.

This was a working route for centuries. The ancient cobblestone path once linked Burrel, Tirana, Durrës, and Mat through these mountains, and the two Ottoman bridges that survive are evidence of that traffic. The Bridge of Abdyl Agha, spanning the river at the canyon entrance, and the Bridge of Kurcaj at the far end were both built in the 15th century without mortar, held together solely by the geometry of the arch. Along the gorge walls, karstic caves provided shelter for caravans and, in later centuries, refuge during blood feuds.

The walk is easy: 2 km one-way on a broad stone trail, about two hours round trip, with minimal elevation change. The trailhead sits near the village of Nikel, 20 km from Tirana. Best visited March through October, in midsummer the pools are deep enough to swim. Your guide brings the bridges and the canyon to life with stories that do not appear in any guidebook.
