Holy Cave of Sari Salltik & Kruje Mountain Views

The road up Mali i Krujes climbs seven kilometres out of the city and ends at a cliff ledge 1,150 m above sea level. From here you look down over Kruje and central Albania, out to the Adriatic on a clear day.

A steep staircase leads from the ledge down to the cave: 15 metres deep, with a sacred spring, the tomb of Sari Salltik and a small mosque said to be the oldest in Albania. Your guide tells the story of the 13th-century dervish who, in Bektashi legend, killed the dragon that terrorised Kruje. The shrine was destroyed in 1967 under communism and rebuilt in 1991, and pilgrims still come.

Many guests combine it with the castle and Old Bazaar for a full day.

Holy Cave of Sari Salltik, Good to Know

Can I do this tour as a day trip from Tirana?

Yes. Kruje is 32 km from Tirana, a 45 to 55 minute drive. We collect you door-to-door from your Tirana hotel, a central meeting point or Tirana Airport (Rinas), run the tour, and have you back in Tirana the same day. Plan for the tour's listed duration plus about 45 to 55 minutes' drive each way. If you're continuing your trip, a one-way drop in Kruje works too.

Where do you pick up, Tirana, Durres or the beaches?

Pickup is door-to-door from any Tirana hotel, a central Tirana meeting point, Tirana Airport (Rinas) and the wider Tirana area, and from Durres, the cruise port and the Durres Riviera beach resorts including Golem, Qerret and Mali i Robit. Always a comfortable, air-conditioned vehicle with your local driver-guide. You choose round-trip or a one-way drop in Kruje; private transfers are available too.

How far is Kruje from Tirana, and how long does it take?

Kruje is about 32 km north of Tirana, a 45 to 55 minute drive, and roughly 30 minutes from Tirana Airport (Rinas).

How much does the tour and the Tirana pickup cost?

The guided tour is €20 per person. Round-trip transfer from Tirana is quoted on request, because the price depends on your group size and date, sharing the vehicle with other guests is cheaper than a private transfer. Send us your hotel and dates and we'll give you an exact price.

Who was Sari Salltik?

A 13th-century dervish and disciple of Haji Bektash Veli, revered across Bektashi and wider Balkan tradition. Bektashi legend has him killing the dragon that terrorised Kruje from this mountain. His cave shrine is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Albania, drawing both Muslim and Christian Albanians for centuries; it was destroyed in 1967 under the communist ban on religion and rebuilt in 1991.

Can you visit the Sari Salltik cave without a guide?

Yes, Rruga e Malit is paved the whole way up and the site is free to enter. What you get with us is the drive in an air-conditioned vehicle, and a local guide who fills in the history of the shrine and the Bektashi tradition around it. It remains a living place of worship, so visit respectfully.

How hard is the walk to the Sari Salltik shrine?

There is no forest hike. The road ends at a panoramic viewpoint, and from there a steep staircase drops to the cave, short but demanding, roughly 10 minutes down and 15 back up.

How long does the tour take, and can I combine it with the castle?

About two hours door-to-door, including 15–20 minutes of driving each way from Kruje city centre. It pairs naturally with the Kruje Castle & Old Bazaar tour to make a full day, and works as a day trip from Tirana with door-to-door pickup.
