Krujë and Berat are the two castle towns most travellers want to combine on an Albania trip — one the medieval stronghold of Skanderbeg, the other the UNESCO-listed 'City of a Thousand Windows'. They sit on opposite sides of Tirana, so a little planning goes a long way.
Here is the plain, local rundown: how far Berat really is from Krujë, the honest options for making the trip, and how to fit both into one itinerary without rushing.
How far is Berat from Kruja?
By road it's roughly 130 km from Krujë to Berat — about 2 to 2.5 hours of driving, depending on traffic around Tirana and the Lushnjë road. There's no shortcut that avoids the capital's orbit, so most of the trip is the run south past Tirana and across the central Albanian plain.
Because the drive is long, Berat works best either as a full-day excursion from Krujë or, more comfortably, as an overnight stop on a wider southbound itinerary toward Gjirokastër and the coast.
Private transfer, furgon, or self-drive?
There's no direct furgon (shared minibus) between Krujë and Berat — you'd ride down to Tirana's terminal, change, and pick up a Berat-bound minibus, which turns a 2.5-hour drive into the better part of a day each way.
A private transfer is door-to-door and leaves when you want. Our fixed price from Krujë to Berat is €100 for the whole car, agreed in advance, with no meter and no surge. For two to four people splitting one fare, it's usually faster and barely more expensive than piecing together public transport.
Self-driving works if you already have a rental, but Berat's old quarters are steep and cobbled and parking sits below the castle — plan to walk up.
What to see in Berat
Berat Castle (Kala) is still a living neighbourhood — people have lived inside its walls for centuries, and you'll find homes, churches and the Onufri Iconography Museum among the ramparts, with wide views over the Osum river valley.
Below the castle, the Mangalem and Gorica quarters face each other across the river, their tiered Ottoman houses stacked so the windows seem to climb the hillside — the view that earned Berat its 'City of a Thousand Windows' name.
Allow at least three to four hours on the ground to give the castle, both quarters and a riverside lunch their due before the drive back to Krujë.
Seeing Kruja and Berat together
If you're based in Krujë, the cleanest plan is an early start, the transfer down to Berat, a half-day exploring, and the return by evening — a long but rewarding day.
If you have more time, treat Krujë and Berat as bookends: castle, bazaar and mountain in Krujë on day one, then transfer to Berat and continue south. We can arrange a one-way transfer that stops for photos along the way rather than a there-and-back rush.
