Qafshtama National Park sits high above Kruja, offering cool mountain air, dense pine forests, and a retreat into nature just a short distance from the historical town.
If you are planning to drive up, here is what you need to know about the journey, the road conditions, and how long it will take.
Distance and Travel Time
The distance from the center of Kruja to the heart of Qafshtama National Park is approximately 18 to 20 kilometers.
Despite the short distance, the drive typically takes 45 to 60 minutes. The time is largely dictated by the nature of the road, which climbs significantly in elevation and features many tight switchbacks.
Road Conditions
The road from Kruja to Qafshtama is fully asphalted, making it accessible for standard rental cars (you do not strictly need a 4x4). However, the road is narrow in many places and the asphalt can be uneven or damaged by winter weather in certain sections.
You will need to drive carefully, especially when navigating blind corners, as you may encounter local traffic, livestock, or occasional debris on the road.
What to see on the way
The drive itself is incredibly scenic. Make sure to stop at 'Shkembi i Vajes' (The Rock of the Maidens), a dramatic cliff with a poignant local history. As you climb higher, the views back down over Kruja and the coastal plain are spectacular, eventually giving way to the thick black pine forests that mark the entrance to the national park.
