Kruja Day Trip from Durres: Every Way to Do It

Thirty-five kilometres from the Adriatic to a medieval castle, and the easiest half day on the Albanian coast.

Updated September 12, 2026

Kruja is the standout day trip from Durres. It is about 35 kilometres inland, under an hour each way, and it delivers something the coast cannot: a genuine medieval fortress, a fifteenth-century Ottoman market street, and mountain air.

The question is never whether it is worth doing. It is how to get there, because there is no direct bus and the options differ more in hassle than in price. Here is each of them, honestly.

How far Kruja is from Durres

About 35 kilometres, and 45 to 55 minutes by road depending on traffic around the Tirana plain. The route skirts the edge of the plain rather than going through Tirana itself, so outside rush hour it usually flows well.

The last stretch is the part people do not expect: the road leaves the flat and climbs the hillside in bends up to the old town, which sits well above the plain. That climb is why the drive takes longer than the distance suggests, and it is also the reason the view from the top is worth the trip on its own.

The four ways to do it

Ranked by how much of your day they cost you rather than by price, because the prices are closer than the effort is.

OptionWhat it means
Guided trip with pickupCollected from your hotel, the Riviera or the port, driven both ways, guided on site. The only option where nothing is left to arrange.
Private taxiA fixed price of around EUR 35 each way between Kruja and Durres. Fast and flexible, but agree the fare and the return before you set off.
Rental carFine if you already have one. Parking is below the old town and the last climb is steep and narrow, so leave the car and walk up.
Public transportThere is no direct bus. You go Durres to Tirana, change to a furgon for Kruja, then the same in reverse. Cheap, and it will eat most of the day.

Arriving by cruise ship

Durres is Albania's main cruise port, and Kruja is the obvious shore excursion from it. The timing works comfortably: under an hour inland, two to three hours on site, under an hour back, which fits inside almost any port call without the clock hanging over you.

Two things are worth arranging before you dock rather than on the quay. First, agree a return time in writing with whoever is driving you; independent taxis at the port will quote a one-way fare and you do not want to be negotiating the return at four in the afternoon. Second, build in a buffer of at least an hour before all-aboard. The drive is reliable, but you are crossing a plain that can back up.

If you are on a ship's own excursion, you will be on a coach on a fixed schedule and you will arrive in the middle of the busiest window. Going independently is the main way to see the bazaar when it is not full.

From Golem and the Durres Riviera

If you are staying at the beach resorts south of the city, add roughly fifteen to twenty minutes to everything above. Golem, Qerret and Mali i Robit are all on the same road and pickups from them are routine.

From the Riviera the half day works best as a morning: leave after breakfast, be in Kruja before the coaches, and be back at the beach for the afternoon. Going the other way round means arriving at the busiest time and driving back in the evening return traffic.

How long you actually need in Kruja

Two hours is enough to walk the bazaar and go into the castle grounds. Three to four hours lets you do both museums properly and eat something. More than that and you are stretching it, unless you are heading up the mountain afterwards.

The castle and the Old Bazaar are one visit, not two: the bazaar is the cobbled lane you walk up to reach the castle gate, so you pass through it either way. The castle grounds and the bazaar are free; the two museums inside the walls charge separately, in cash, in lek.

The timing that matters

Between roughly 11:00 and 15:00 the bazaar fills with the day trips out of Tirana and the cruise groups up from Durres, all arriving in the same window. It is the single thing most worth planning around.

Before 10:00 the lane is quiet and half the shops are still opening the shutters. That is the version of Kruja people photograph. Leaving Durres by 08:30 puts you there for it, and gets you back before the afternoon heat.

What the day costs

A private taxi runs about EUR 35 each way between Kruja and Durres. The castle museums are a few hundred lek each and take cash only; there is no ATM inside the walls, so change money down in the town. The bazaar itself and the castle grounds cost nothing.

The guided half day is EUR 20 per person, and the guide can tell you which half of the castle wall is original. Pickup from Durres, Golem or the port is quoted on request, because it depends on group size and date; sharing the car with other guests costs less than a private transfer.

Just need the transfer?

If you would rather organise Kruja yourself and only need the car, the Durres route is a fixed EUR 35 each way, agreed before you travel. No meters and no port-side negotiation.

Or do the whole thing in one booking

Our Castle and Old Bazaar half day picks up in Durres, Golem or at the port, covers both directions by car, and puts a local guide with you in the castle and the bazaar. It is the version of this trip with nothing left to arrange at the quayside.
